The Basilisk’S Last Blink

Deep in the cavern where the shadows crawl
I faced the beast with the eyes that enthrall
One single glance could turn bone to stone
Yet I laughed aloud in the dark alone

Shield held high, I turned just so
To strike where the serpent's eyes can't go

Strike the beast 'fore the eyelids close
Where the venom sleeps and the danger grows
One last blink and the spell will break
The basilisk falls for the kingdom's sake

Its hiss was fire, its scales like steel
The ground did quake with each coiled wheel
I feigned to the left, then turned to the right
And the stone curse fled in the lantern light

Now statues breathe and the hall stands free
For the hero's tale is the toast at sea
